The Senate passed the Statewide smoking ban on March 27th. A copy of the bill as it was passed by the Senate (SF 238) is Linked Here.
The bill has no exceptions, even for VFW’s or American Legions around the state. I did not vote for the bill for the reasons explained in my previous Blog entry (which is Linked Here), back in February.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives. Governor Pawlenty has already signalled his support for a Statewide ban, but has also stated his preference for some exceptions.
I’d like to lobby for a state wide SUV ban. I work in downtown MPLS. Every morning on my way to work, the view from the bus I take is ruined by the smog that’s belching out of every motor vehicle on the road (most of which are SUV’s) and just hanging in the air. Furthermore it is hard to see around SUV’s on the freeway and in parking lots. I don’t know how many times I’ve almost gotten into an accident because I couldn’t see around the huge SUVs parked on either side of my car while I’m trying to back out of my spot.
***It is discrimination and unconstitutional to ban smoking and segregate smokers to a managed place to have a smoke. If a nonsmoker does not like a particular place due to smoking than they don’t have to go there or they can leave. Smokers now are faced with the same issue, if they want to go to a bar or club and have a smoke with a beer then they have to leave? This is totally racist when it is legal to buy and smoke cigs. here in this country. If the state wants to ban smoking than our wonderful brainless leaders should make cigs totally illegal and treated the same as smoking pot.
